How the Next Generation Farmer Fund Is Investing in the Future of Farming
The Future of Farming Starts with People
Every harvest represents more than a season's work. It's the result of countless decisions, years of experience, and a commitment to caring for the land.
But the future of farming faces real challenges. As the average age of U.S. farmers continues to rise, the next generation is entering an industry where starting and sustaining a farm can be increasingly difficult. According to the USDA 2022 Census of Agriculture, the U.S. lost more than 140,000 farms between 2017 and 2022, bringing the total number of farms below 2 million.
As farmers retire, beginning farmers face significant barriers, including high startup and operating costs, limited access to affordable farmland, and increasingly unpredictable growing conditions. At the same time, they're tasked with building successful businesses while caring for the natural resources that farms and communities will depend on for generations to come.
It's a pivotal moment for agriculture. Who steps in next will help shape not only what we grow, but how we grow it.
Investing in the Next Generation
Building a farm is about more than creating a successful business. It's also an opportunity to steward the land through practices that support healthier soils, cleaner water, greater biodiversity, and more resilient farms.
The challenge is that these investments often require resources that can be difficult to access, especially for farmers who are just getting started. Building soil health, adopting new conservation practices, or improving farm infrastructure doesn't happen overnight, but these efforts can have lasting benefits for both the land and the communities it supports.
That's where initiatives like the Next Generation Farmer Fund can make a meaningful difference.
A Collaborative Effort
Created by Whole Foods Market and the National Young Farmers Coalition, the Next Generation Farmer Fund provides financial grants and technical assistance to beginning farmers and ranchers under 40 who are adopting or expanding sustainable land stewardship practices.
The fund is designed as a collaborative effort. Whole Foods Market matches partner contributions dollar for dollar, allowing participating organizations to expand the program's reach and support more farmers than they could alone.
Rather than investing in a single project or region, the fund invests in people—helping equip the next generation with the resources they need to build thriving farms while caring for the land they'll pass on to future generations.
Why MegaFood Joined the Fund
At MegaFood, we know healthy people and a healthy planet go hand in hand. Healthy farmers nourish our soil, and rich soil grows the food that sustains us. As the first vitamin and supplement brand to champion The Coalition, we've supported their work through advocacy and donations for the past three years as part of our 1% for the Planet commitment.
We're excited to see Whole Foods Market elevate this work and raise awareness through the Next Generation Farmer Fund. Supporting the fund was a natural next step in our ongoing commitment to Young Farmers and the future of agriculture.
No single organization can solve the challenges facing farming today. But by working together, we can help create more opportunities for young farmers to succeed and strengthen the food system we all rely on.
